2 Assisi and Spello
Encircled by its imposing medieval walls, Assisi retains the timeless charm of a typical Umbrian town. It is a welcoming place, celebrated for its wealth of historical, artistic, and culinary traditions. In the Middle Ages, Assisi’s strategic position made it the focus of conquests and sieges, leading to the construction of numerous fortresses, including the Rocca Maggiore.
The town is inseparably linked to Saint Francis, born here in 1182. His choice to dedicate his life to God, to serve the poor, and to renounce his family’s wealth made him the enduring symbol of Assisi. In recognition of its extraordinary heritage, the historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. At its heart stands the Basilica of San Francesco, a 12th-century masterpiece built from the pink stone of Mount Subasio. The complex includes both the Upper and Lower Basilicas, their walls adorned with vibrant frescoes by masters such as Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Puccio Capanna. Midway along the nave, a staircase leads down to the crypt, where the remains of Saint Francis are enshrined.
From Assisi, the journey continues to the picturesque hill town of Spello, closely connected to the Franciscan tradition. Nestled among olive groves, Spello offers glimpses of its Roman past through its ancient city gates, while the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore reveals stunning Renaissance frescoes. Together, these two towns embody the rich interplay of history, faith, and art that defines Umbria.

3 Spoleto, Monteluco Sanctuary and Valnerina
Spoleto, an ancient Roman city, later became a powerful Lombard duchy. Its serious and somewhat austere character is softened by charming winding streets, elegant palaces, and a wealth of well-preserved medieval architecture. The town’s history is palpable in every corner, from fortified gates to stone-paved piazzas, offering travelers a deep sense of connection to centuries past.
Nearby lies the Monteluco Sanctuary, perched on a wooded hill that has long been a place of spiritual retreat. The serene atmosphere of this sacred site provides a contemplative contrast to Spoleto’s bustling historic center. Beyond the sanctuary, the Valnerina valley unfolds with lush landscapes, rivers, and traditional Umbrian villages, embodying the timeless harmony of nature and culture.

4 Lago Trasimeno, Monte del Lago, and the Basilica of Santa Margherita in Cortona
Set in the green heart of Umbria, Lake Trasimeno is a true natural paradise, framed by gentle hills and soft slopes that seem to cradle its shimmering waters. The surrounding countryside invites moments of quiet reflection, with the lake’s serene surface reflecting the changing light of day.
Monte del Lago offers picturesque views over the lake and the surrounding Umbrian landscape, where olive groves and vineyards stretch toward the horizon. The journey continues to Cortona, a hilltop town renowned for its artistic and spiritual heritage. The Basilica of Santa Margherita, a jewel of Renaissance architecture, preserves the legacy of the saint who brought life and devotion to the town, drawing travelers into its calm, luminous interior.
