At the foot of the Piedmont Alps near Biella, one of Italy’s most remarkable traditions comes to life every five years: the Passion Play of Sordevolo. An entire village transforms into a vast open-air stage, where hundreds of local volunteers bring a 17th-century masterpiece to life through spectacular crowd scenes, authentic costumes, and a deeply moving atmosphere. Set against a stunning Alpine backdrop, this is far more than a theatrical performance, it is a unique cultural experience.
The 24th Sordevolo Passion Play will take place from 19 June to 26 September 2027.

A journey into the heart of Italy’s rice-growing tradition around Vercelli. Landscapes of water-filled fields and agricultural heritage define the region, with insight into traditional rice cultivation at a local farm, where production methods and rural life remain closely intertwined.

3 Oropa Sanctuary and Sordevolo Passion Play
Free time in the morning. After lunch at the hotel, visit to the UNESCO-listed Sanctuary of Oropa, where centuries of pilgrimage history are reflected in its sacred architecture and artistic treasures during a guided tour. The itinerary continues to Sordevolo, where the entire village transforms into a vast open-air theatre. The Passion Play, performed by hundreds of local participants, presents a powerful and emotionally charged interpretation of a centuries-old story against the dramatic backdrop of the Piedmont Alps.

Stone alleys, defensive walls, and well-preserved rural architecture reflect the region’s medieval heritage and enduring local identity.

5 Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands
A highlight of the journey unfolds on Lake Maggiore, where the Borromean Islands combine natural beauty with refined heritage. After meeting the guide in Stresa, boat passages reveal sweeping alpine panoramas and shimmering waters en route to Isola Bella, renowned for its baroque palace and spectacular terraced gardens rising above the lake.
