Amidst Mountains and Castles

The South Tyrol and Trentino are popular holiday destinations for nature lovers and all those looking for rest and relaxation. There are many opportunities to get close to nature and to experience it up close, be it through hiking, mountain climbing, bicycle riding or just walking through the breath-taking countryside. The lush greens of the alpine meadows, and the colourful variety of the flora, are contrasted by the dramatic mountains. Picturesque villages which dot the landscape offer a welcome break from the stresses of day to day life and will invigorate even the most jaded traveller. Gentle alpine pastures encourage relaxation and the various flower fragrances present a feast for the senses. Culture enthusiasts will find their feet here too, as this region also offers a wealth of interesting sights, art and history. The people of the South Tyrol and Trentino are passionate about their heritage and this becomes clear when you see the range of preserved traditions. Food lovers, too, will appreciate the excellent cuisine in the South Tyrol and Trentino, where hearty regional dishes and the fine wines are available everywhere.

Outdoor Fun in South Tyrol - Llama Trekking

Trentino • South Tyrol, Places of interest: Outdoor Fun in South Tyrol - Llama Trekking

Llamas belong to the camel family. Over 6,000 years ago, Indians domesticated the wild species of these New World camels. Llamas are calm and mostly reserved herd animals. They have developed a ranking system, which they determine through spitting. Contrary to the general stereotype, humans only very rarely become ‘spitting victims’. In South Tyrol, many farmers now keep these sensible animals: llama trekking in the great outdoors is a unique experience for both young and old.

The garden of Neustift Monastery

Trentino • South Tyrol, Places of interest: The garden of Neustift Monastery

This historical monastery garden reopened in the summer of 2004 following extensive restoration work. The sequoia tree towers imposing ly over the rear part of the garden, with the impressive centuries-old ginkgo trees directly opposite. The pretty Baroque garden with its myriad flowers and herbs and beautiful fountain is laid out between them. The pendulous grapes hanging from shady pergolas are especially inviting in autumn and divide the front area from the rear part of the Baroque garden. Around 75 different varieties thrive in the herb garden which, in addition to familiar plants such as St. John’s wort, motherwort and fenugreek also includes exotic herbs such as lemon grass, pineapple sage, Jamaican thyme and tobacco. Two historical features enrich the garden: the walk-in aviary and the ‘Piszin’, a tower-like fountain. It is surrounded by a ditch which once served for breeding edible fish and is now richly embellished with flowers. A fish pond has been built close to the aviary. The historical garden is part of a religious retreat but can nevertheless be visited on three days per week.

Messner Mountain Museum

Trentino • South Tyrol, Places of interest: Messner Mountain Museum

The Messner Mountain Museum, called MMM for short, is a project of the famous South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner. MMM Firmian, MMM Juval, MMM Dolomites, MMM Ortles and MMM Ripa - those are the names of the five museums, which belong to the project. The extreme mountaineer wanted to create a mountain museum that was one of-a-kind. And in that he was successful! The centre is portrayed by the museum located in Sigmundskron Castle. The focus of this museum lies with the mountains in their artistic beauty and the history of mountaineering. In

MMM Juval various exhibits collected by Reinhold Messner revolving around the myths of the mountains are displayed. The worldwide largest collection of Tibetan items is located in the interior of its ancient walls high over Naturno. The MMM Dolomites, located on Monte Rite south of Cortina at around 2,181 m, is dedicated to the theme ‘the vertical world’ of the Dolomites. In the Val Venosta, in the MMM Ortles, the world revolves around the famous Ortles mountain. Visitors literally enter the mountain. Inside one can form a picture of great mountains of ice, the Arctic and

Antarctica, the power of avalanches and the effort of artists to portray ice. Right next to the museum in the ‘Yak and Yeti’ restaurant in addition to South Tyrolean cuisine, Tibetan dishes are also served. The fifth house of the museum project is the MMM Ripa: an interactive museum was founded in Brunico Castle dedicated to the topic of ‘mountain peoples’. Reinhold Messner has invited representatives from various mountain cultures to exchange their experiences here. In addition, exhibits from the everyday life of the Sherpa, Indios, Tibetans, Montolas and Burusho people are displayed
