Modica · Vindicari & Marzamemi · Syracuse · Avola · Mt. Etna · Cooking Class · Catania
Indulge in the simultaneously simple and complex flavors of Sicily. Sweet and spicy, crunchy and soft, on this tour your group will savor some of Sicily’s best products.
Day 1 – Arrival
When we arrive at the Catania airport a private bus will be waiting to transfer us to the hotel. We will have some time to unwind before a welcome dinner is served in the evening.
Day 2 – Modica & the Hyblean Mountains
Today we will visit Modica, the sweetest of towns. Famous for its decadent chocolate made using an ancient Aztec recipe, we will have the opportunity to try the cold-worked chocolate. Then we will continue on to the Hyblean Mountains to taste some of the cheeses made there.
Day 3 – Vindicari & Marzamemi
We will let the sensorial journey lead us along Sicily’s southwestern coast. Following breakfast our tour leader and private bus will take us to visit the lovely fishing village of Marzamemi, used as a location for many Italian films and just 2 miles away from Pachino, were the delicious little red gems of tomatoes are grown. We will see the tonnara (tuna fishery), which is the lifeblood of the town and the fulcrum from which the town and its sandstone houses extend out from. The coastal area is full of charm and great little lunch places, which is where we will stop for a fish-based lunch including sun-dried Pachino tomatoes, olives and cheese, served with a glass of local wine.
Day 4 – Avola & Syracuse
Today we will visit Avola, the town famous for both its almonds and red wine. We will begin by visiting an almond producer, where the farmer will explain how to cultivate and make some of the best desserts in Sicily. We will do a tasting before going to a Federican castle near Syracuse to sample some fabulous reds in a luxurious setting. Afterwards we will complete our transfer to our new hotel in Taormina.
Day 5 – Mount Etna & Bronte
We will visit the area around Mount Etna today. First we will speak with a beekeeper and sample the delicious honey made from the flowers growing in the volcanic soil on the slopes of the active volcano. Then we will continue on to Bronte to try its famous pistachios, often used in Sicilian cuisine.
Day 6 – Cooking class in the Taormina area
Sicilian cuisine is world-famous. Today we will learn to make two delicious Sicilian favorites: pasta “alla norma” and cannoli. When we have finished the meal we prepared, a delicious espresso and limoncello will complete the experience.
Day 7 – Catania
Today we will visit an olive mill and do a tasting of extra-virgin olive oil served with warm bread. Though the bread itself is delicious, it is really only the vehicle for delivering the oil to the mouth and its heat will help release the flavors. We will then continue on to a citrus farm for a lunch that will feature many of the traditional products and dishes for which Sicily is so loved. In the evening the farewell dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 8 – Departure
After one last cappuccino and a final look around, we will return to the airport for our flight out.
