1 Arrival in Palermo and transfer to Castellammare del Golfo

  • Check-in, dinner at a local restaurant and overnight.

2 Trapani and Erice with typical pastry and wine

  • Guided walk through the beautiful old town of Trapani with glimpses of the wonderful panoramic landscape of the salt flats
  • In the afternoon, visit the walled village of Erice, a medieval town perched on a rock offering fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. Stroll the quaint streets of the attractive historic district with its small squares and landscaped inner courtyards
  • Enjoy a traditional almond pastry and a glass of Marsala wine from the old bakery.
  • Evening at leisure to explore the beautiful centre of Castellammare

3 Camilleri’s Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples - change of hotel

  • Today’s visit is to Agrigento, hometown of Andrea Camilleri, the writer and creator of Commissario Montalbano.
  • The sheer size of the Old Town area combined with the Temple buildings serve to remind you how important this ancient city would have been in Greek times
  • Visit the Valley of the Temples with the perfectly preserved Temple of Concordia

4 Montalbano’s home and Scicli – change of hotel

  • Today we discover more about the places which the TV series has made so familiar.
  • Stop in Punta Secca at Montalbano’s home, with its famous terrace and beach where he takes his customary swim.
  • Enzo is waiting for us in his Trattoria for a bite of lunch.
  • After a digestive stroll along the beach as the Commissario himself does, we go on to Scicli, where we will see the location of the police station.
  • Hotel near Noto.

5 Ragusa and Modica in the footsteps of Montalbano

  • Visit Ragusa and Modica which provide the most of the scenes in the Montalbano episodes
  • Strolling through the narrow streets you will feel the atmosphere of Vigata.
  • Both cities are a beautiful example of the Baroque heritage of the Val di Noto and will impress you for their breathtaking architecture.
  • In Modica, we will sample a local speciality, a unique type of chocolate inspired by an ancient recipe that gives it a peculiar grainy texture

6 The Fishing village of Marzamemi, cherry tomatoes and Syracuse – change of hotel

  • In the morning head to Marzamemi, an authentic little fishing village, whose main feature is the 16th century “Tonnara” (tuna-fishing site).
  • We then stop at a farm producing sweet Pachino cherry tomatoes. Learn about the production and enjoy a tasting
  • In the afternoon visit Syracuse and wander through the narrow, winding streets of the Ortigia Peninsula, the historical centre of Syracuse.
  • Hotel in the Taormina area.

7 Etna and Taormina

  • Mt Etna is today’s highlight as we visit the highest active volcano in Europe.
  • Starting out at around 1900m we will make our way on foot to the Silvestri craters where we can see the lavaflows from the 1983 und 2001 eruptions.
  • Stop at a winery for a wine tasting with typical snacks before visiting Taormina, with its Greco-Roman Amphitheatre, offering spectacular views out to sea and on to Mt Etna.

8 Palermo and Monreale – change of hotel

  • Explore Sicily’s capital Palermo, a lively port city, with stunning palaces sitting close to typical Southern Italian street scenes.
  • In the mountains above Palermo, the Normans built Monreale Cathedral in celebration of their victory over Islam, which together with the Cloister form one of the most important sites on the island.
  • Back in town, we stop to taste the famous Arancini (fried rice balls stuffed with meat and tomatoes).
