2. Borromean Islands and Stresa
Today we take a boat ride to the Borromean Islands and our fist stop is on Isola Bella, dominated by its sumptuous Baroque palace and luxuriant Italian-style garden which is decorated with ponds, fountains and a plethora of statues dating from the second half of the 17th century. The white peacocks that wander over the manicured lawns add their grace to this enchanting spot. After our visit we continue by boat to Isola dei Pescatori, once a fisherman’s island and Hemingway’s favourite Borromean Island. We have time on our own to explore the island with its narrow alleyways and romantic churches before returning to the mainland. We visit Stresa with its enchanting setting which evokes the atmosphere of the Belle Epoque. Luxury villas and opulent Art Nouveau hotels line the elegant lakeside, an ideal place for a tranquil stroll.
3. Day at leisure OR
Optional excursion: Lake Orta and the Island of San Giulio
Lake Orta is a hidden jewel, the smallest pre-Alpine lake. The picturesque hilly landscape in which small villages are embedded, radiates peace and tranquillity and enchants with its Mediterranean flair. In the village of Orta, located on the shores of the lake, we wind across the old market square and through the narrow, medieval alleyways, home to lovely little craft shops, and along the way see romantic, secluded gardens. We take a short boat ride to the island of San Giulio, to visit the oldest church of this region with its precious frescoes dating back to the Renaissance period.
Full-day tour escort for excursion to Lake Orta: € 235,00
Return boat-ride to the Island of San Giulio: € 5,00 per person
4. Centovalli train and Locarno
Today we travel through Italy’s largest wilderness area, the picturesque ‘Val Grande’ National Park to the frontier town of Domodossola, where we board the Centovalli train for a 2-hour scenic journey through the fascinating ‘Valley of a Hundred Valleys’. Crossing no fewer than 83 bridges and viaducts, 31 tunnels, and passing quaint mountain villages and numerous waterfalls we reach charming Locarno in neighbouring Switzerland. There are few lakeside towns as pretty and charming as Locarno. This town is set at the northern tip of Lake Maggiore and is said to have the warmest climate in Switzerland. Its historical centre is small and compact and is perfect to explore on foot, as most of it is pedestrianised. We stroll along the lovely lakeside promenade and through the narrow cobblestone alleys with pretty pastel-coloured houses and chic boutiques, before returning by coach to the hotel. Don’t forget your passports!
5. Lake Como
Lake Como is perhaps the most jet-set of the Italian Lakes. George Clooney chose this attractive lake as his Italian home, and parts of the Bond James Bond film Casino Royale were filmed here, too.
The lake has, however, much to offer in its own rights. The town of Como, centre of an ancient silk industry, is our first port of call. This is one of the most scenic parts of the lake with soaring mountains, pretty lakeside villages and luxury villas dotted everywhere. On our guided tour of the fascinating Old Town we see the late Renaissance Gothic Cathedral and the attractive lakeside promenade.
In the afternoon, we take an hour-long cruise in the Gulf of Como and see the impressive villas of the rich and famous who have homes here.
