2. Florence, the capital city of the Renaissance
No Renaissance tour of Italy is complete without visiting Florence, the capital of Tuscany. On our guided tour we admire the Cathedral with its Campanile and Baptistery, and the Palazzo Vecchio overlooking the Piazza della Signoria with Michelangelo’s famous statue of David (external viewing only). Unsurprisingly the entire city centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The afternoon is at leisure to admire the jewellery shops on the Ponte Vecchio, go boutique shopping (Gucci and Ferragamo opened their first haute couture shops here in the 1920s) or sit and enjoy a frothy cappuccino.
3. Pisa and Lucca
This morning we set off to Pisa where a local guide will show us the UNESCO-listed Piazza dei Miracoli with the world’s most iconic leaning tower (entrance charge applies). In the shadow of the Leaning Tower we also see the lovely Bell Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery and Cemetery.
In the afternoon we travel to Lucca, famous for its Opera House (Giacomo Puccini was a native), imposing Renaissance walls, and sweet circular bread, called buccellato, which allows the locals to go about their daily lives as they carry the bread home, wearing it as a kind of delicious bracelet. On a guided tour we will discover the main sights, including the Cathedral, the imposing Amphitheatre Square, and the most important noble residences of the town. Lucca is a place that will appeal to all your senses, for its sights, sounds, scents and flavours.
4. Day at leisure OR optional excursion: Cinque Terre
Five fishing villages, the so-called ‘Cinque Terre’: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, are nestled into narrow incisions in the rocks along the 12-km-long coastline. The location is heavenly: the houses squeeze themselves between the rocks and a kind of natural amphitheatre of vineyards, vegetable gardens and olive groves.
We travel by coach to La Spezia from where our adventure by train and boat begins, stopping off to discover two or three of the picturesque villages.
Full-day tour escort for excursion to the Cinque Terre: € 220,-
Cinque Terre train & boat tickets: € 35,- per person
(Quotation for local coach hire from the hotel to La Spezia available on request)
5. San Gimignano and Volterra with visit to alabaster workshop
On today‘s excursion we get to see two picture-postcard towns: Volterra and San Gimignano. We start our day in San Gimignano, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its marvellous medieval architecture. The soaring towers of San Gimignano can be seen from far away, giving rise to the town’s alternative name of “Medieval Manhattan”.
In the afternoon we continue to Volterra. This city is of Etruscan origin and has an almost eerie atmosphere. Volterra has recently been featured as the backdrop for various mystical films, such as “Twilight”. We learn all about its unique history and see the lovely Cathedral, Medici Fortress and Town Hall before visiting a traditional alabaster workshop.
