Day 1 Arrive at your hotel on Lake Como and relax with a welcome drink before dinner
Day 2 This morning we are off to Bergamo. Bergamo’s main attraction lies in its Upper City, which is surrounded by medieval walls. We will be met by a local guide who will accompany us by funicular and a short walk to Piazza Vecchia, where we will take in the Cathedral, Baptistery, Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with the Colleoni Chapel and the Palazzo della Ragione.
After our city tour we continue through the hilly landscape to discover the Franciacorta wine region, famous for its high-quality sparkling wines, and stop to taste this wonderful bubbly served with local delicacies.
All Franciacorta wine is bottle-aged, to increase its complexity and flavour. The rigorous production methods used together with the small of wine that is produced, go some way to justifying the relatively high price tag of Franciacorta wines, some of which command prices of hundreds of pounds!
Day 3 Today will be spent visiting chic and trendy Milan before toasting in the New Year
A local guide will show us the sophisticated part of Milan with the Vittorio Emanuele II shopping gallery, one of the most frequented meeting points of the Milanese, and the Cathedral which is the symbol of the city and is in fact the 5th largest Christian church in the world. It also has the most statues: 3400 statues, 135 gargoyles and 700 figures decorate Milan’s Duomo. In pride of place is however the famous Madonnina, a gold coloured statue of Mary that stands on the Cathedral’s highest spire.
The afternoon is free for shopping in Italy’s capital of fashion or sightseeing on your own. You might like to visit the Scala Museum where memorabilia of famous opera singers, material about composers and conductors, and also stage sets and prints are on display, or take in the magnificent interior of the Cathedral.
Back at the hotel we will enjoy a wonderful New Year’s Eve 6-course Gala Dinner including wine and water, and a flute of Champagne at midnight to toast in the New Year.
Day 4 After a leisurely breakfast New Year’s Day is free to relax and replenish your strength,
You might like to discover the medieval history of Lecco, strolling through its centre where you can admire Italy’s second highest bell tower at the Basilica of San Nicolò, and take in the Torre Viscontea, a remaining trace of what was once the Castle of Lecco, or simply sip a frothy cappuccino at a lakeside cafe and watch the world go by.
